Overview

According to 2022 Census of Agriculture, 7,683 specialty crop farms operate in Wisconsin on 299,765 acres. Wisconsin has 1,770 orchards operating on 9,882 acres and 1,071 berry farms growing on 21,736 acres. The state has 1,750 ornamental floriculture businesses, with over 50% growing woody plants, 30% producing herbaceous ornamental crops, and 10% producing crops under cover (including greenhouse growers).

Edible specialty crop production and processing in the state accounts for $6.4 billion in economic activity and about 35,000 jobs. Wisconsin is the 4th largest potato producer in the US (2023 statistics:  67,500 acres in production), is a large producer of snap beans and peas, and produces 60% of the US total cranberry harvest. Wisconsin is the top exporter of both cranberries and ginseng in the US, and is the country’s #6 Christmas tree producer, with 941 farms on 25,975 acres.
