The UW-Madison Division of Extension Horticulture Program is excited to announce a new mini series of free online programs designed to help Wisconsin gardeners protect their backyard harvests. The Big 3 Apple Insect Webinar Series will provide home growers of all experience levels and backgrounds with the essential tools to identify, monitor, and manage the most common pests that impact apple fruit quality.
Growing healthy, blemish-free apples can be a challenge, but understanding the life cycles and behaviors of key insects can make all the difference. This three-part series, led by Statewide Fruit Outreach Specialist Josie Dillon, will dive into the “ins and outs” of the three major apple insects found in Wisconsin.
There is no cost to attend, though registration is required for each session.
Webinar Series Schedule
Part 1: Plum Curculio

- Date/Time: Friday, May 1, Noon–1 p.m.
- Description: Learn how to manage the Plum Curculio, a common weevil species that can significantly impact fruit between bloom and the weeks immediately following petal fall. This session covers critical identification tips and timing for effective intervention.
Part 2: Codling Moth

- Date/Time: Friday, May 15, Noon–1 p.m.
- Description: This session focuses on the widespread Codling Moth. We will discuss how this species impacts fruit from late spring through mid-summer and explore monitoring techniques to keep your apple crop clean and healthy.
Part 3: Apple Maggot

- Date/Time: Friday, June 12, Noon–1 p.m.
- Description: The series concludes with a look at the Apple Maggot, a common fly species active in mid- to late-summer. Discover the best monitoring and management practices to protect your ripening fruit as you head toward harvest.

Josie Dillon is the Statewide Fruit Outreach Specialist for the University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension. With a focus on accessible, science-based solutions, Josie works to empower home gardeners and commercial growers alike to find success in fruit production across the state.
